To craft rugged luxury itineraries for open minded explorers seeking faraway and bespoke experiences
A South Africa Safari Travel Guide is a post that I’ve always wanted to be able to publish on this blog, because, well, Safari has been at the top of my bucket list for the longest time! And I have finally made this dream come true happen! Thanks to our luxury partners in South Africa I was able to experience a luxury trip to South Africa that was truly a once in a lifetime experience. You can fully expect me to cancel any and all future travel and only book Africa Safaris for myself from here on out.
I’m brimming with stories that will transport you straight to the savannah. It’s not often that a trip brings me to actual tears, but this trip managed to do it. Imagine an escape filled with incredible wildlife sightings, unparalleled customer service, and emotional moments that tug at the very fibers of your spirit. This isn’t just a vacation; it’s a profound encounter with the natural world, promising revelations and reverie.
Welcome, adventurers and wanderers alike, to our humble recount of an unforgettable safari experience in the heart of South Africa. Prepare to experience the pulsing heart of the African bush – where the roar of a lion greets the dawn, and the setting sun kisses the horizon goodnight against a choir of crickets and the trumpeting of a baby elephant.
As a travel advisor, I get to go to a lot of incredible places, and experience a lot of wonderful things, but going on Safari is possibly the icing on the cake out of all of them, and you can hereby expect any future non essential trips to be cancelled to exclusively do South Africa Safari travel.
What made it so special? Well, going into the bush, I understood that we would be seeing wildlife. Like, I understood that I would see lions, elephants, giraffes, hopefully a rhino, maybe some hippos! What I didn’t know was how immersive and emotional the experience would be!
We were ten feet from baby lion cubs who waited while their mommy hunted. We also got the R rated version of the “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” scene from the Lion King, showing us just how those Lion Cubs were made. A cheeky male elephant we dubbed Ernest wandered right up to our front deck the first day at our lodge and just chilled, eating the branches right next to where I was taking my afternooon tea.
Amazing.
And while the wildlife was spectacular – the people and the lodges made the trip. I’ve worked in luxury travel for years, and I have never seen staff so attentive, even on a private yacht.
From being welcomed in the morning with my tea or coffee just the way I like it with a smile and my name, to remembering which dishes I liked best and to send me home with the recepie so I can try and recreate it myself (I won’t be able to – I’m not a terrible cook but this was amazing!). I was BLOWN AWAY by the warmth and friendliness of the staff in the safari lodges in South Africa.
There was really no part of the trip I didn’t like, no thing I would have changed, except I wish I could have stayed longer.
Being an American who has lived in Italy, now lives in Spain, and is what most people would consider incredibly well traveled, for being not even 30…I can sometimes feel myself becoming jaded to new experiences and travel situations. While I love travel and exploring, I’ll admit it, sometimes things lose their “wow” factor. Occasionally, I do feel that teeny bit of desensitisation.
South Africa brought that wow factor back for me. I’m not am emotional person, but I cried watching a parade of elephants go by at sunset.

The beauty of South African safari travel is that is truly a year-round destination, but the best wildlife viewing is typically during the dry winter months of May to September. This period allows for easier spotting of animals as they concentrate around water sources, and the risk of malaria is at its lowest. The weather is generally sunny and pleasant, although it can be chilly during mornings and evenings.
The best time to visit South Africa depends on where you plan to go and what you want to do. Here are a few general guidelines:
While there are 11 official languages in South Africa, English is widely spoken in South African parks, making communication a breeze.
The Rand (ZAR) is the currency you’ll need. ATMs are available in urban areas, but ensure you have cash when venturing into the more remote regions.
Kruger National Park offers vast expanses of wild territory for exploration, while Sabi Sands is famed for its luxury accommodations and exceptional leopard sightings.
Fly into Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport and get a connecting flight to one of the smaller airports near the parks, such as Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport or Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport. Bear in mind, the bush planes that whisk you to the lodges have limited seating – early booking secures your seat in paradise. Your travel advisor will help structure your trip with flights and airports that make the most sense for your itinerary.
Nestled within the untamed wilds, luxury properties like Dulini Lodge and Lion Sands stand as beacons of comfort offering exquisite safari experiences. These properties pride themselves on combining elegance with the pulse of the African bush. To fully immerse in the South Africa Safari travel experience while ensuring your safety and convenience, keep the following in mind:
Your footfalls are hushed, your senses keen — welcome to the canvas of the African veld.
An early start (5 am!) promises the best chance to witness the majestic carnivores on the prowl. The crisp air and the soft light enhance the beauty of the landscape as you follow the spoor through the grass.
The ‘golden hour’ before sunset is when photo opportunities are at their peak. A sundowner stop, where you can savor a drink with the setting sun as your backdrop, is a typical, and delightful, safari ritual.
For a more intimate encounter with the wilderness, sign up for a night drive or a walking safari. These offer insight into the nocturnal activities of animals and the small wonders often missed on a regular drive.
The success of your safari often hinges on the expertise of your ranger and tracker. Don’t be shy to ask questions; their knowledge could unearth secrets of wildlife behavior you’d otherwise miss.
Pack light layers for fluctuating temperatures, with special emphasis on neutral tones to blend into the environment. Don’t forget your binoculars, camera, sunscreen, and a hat for protection against the African sun.
Packing smart is crucial for a comfortable safari. Be sure to include:
Would you spend a night under the starlit African sky? Some South Africa Safari Travel Lodges offer breathtaking open-air sleepouts where dinner is delivered, and you stay connected with the main lodge via radio. This outstanding experience is a must for those who want to feel at one with the wilderness, and can also serve as a magical setting for special occasions.
Each day on safari is unique, filled with little moments that culminate into profound memories. Hence, spending at least 3-4 nights in the bush is recommended to maximize your chances of observing diverse wildlife, including spotting all Big Five members, which was a thrill I encountered on my first day!
Not every game drive ends with a roar, but the quiet splendor of a sunset over the savannah, drink in hand, is a moment worth cherishing. The serenity of these moments makes it crucial to commit to a few nights’ stay – it grants you the opportunity to relish the unexpected delights of the bush.
You’ll always remember the first time you see the Big Five in a single drive. The sight of elephants quenching their thirst at dusk alongside a tiny, bashful calf is a memory to savor and treasure.
Capturing the essence of the African wilderness through the lens is an art. Patience and presence are key. Keep your camera ready for sudden moments but don’t forget to put down the viewfinder to absorb the majesty with your own eyes. Remember, photography should always respect the dignity and space of the wildlife.
There you have it, my fellow safari enthusiasts – a sneak peek into the grandeur of the South African safari experience. Once you’ve tasted the dust of an African sunset and locked eyes with a wild beast, you’ll carry a piece of the savannah with you forever. May your safari be filled with enchantment, the ecstasy of discovery, and a soothing balm to the soul that only Mother Africa can provide. Safe travels, and may the spirit of the wilderness awaken a new song within you.

It is an adventure beyond words, an intimate encounter with nature’s unscripted grandeur.
