Hello, I’m Sydney Zaruba and I am the Boho Traveller!
I am a Florida-based native, who runs 2 businesses and travels all over the world.
I was born in Key West, Florida, and we moved to Saint Augustine, FL when I was 6, after about 10 years of my parents working at a watersports business in the Keys. My dad made money giving sailing lessons, and my mom ran pretty much ran everything else. When living down there, we were on board a 32’ WestSail named the Athene (believe me, that’s very small for 2 people and their baby!). I was born on a boat and have had my sea legs since day 1. My first experience traveling was on board the Athene at two weeks old to visit the Dry Tortugas.
After the move to Saint Augustine, I continued to sail on board my family’s new boat, the Schooner Freedom, a 76-foot charter boat. Still operating, we take tourists in town out on 2-hour sailing trips, just to give them a taste of the high seas during their vacation. I am in the process of obtaining my 100-ton masters’ captain’s license, which should be completed by the end of 2018. Fortunately for me, my parents raised me with gypsy roots, traveling all over the United States. Tagging along with us would be my brother, and often our dogs, the cat, and sometimes even Grandmama. Cross-country road trips were more frequent than not, and my desire for travel can be directly related back to my nomad feet upbringing. Thanks to my parents, I can never sit still in one place for too long.
In 2016 toward the end of my college career, I moved to Florence, Italy, after having studied abroad there through my university the year before. I traveled all over Italy and Europe, with only the intention to stay for a few months, when I friend of mine I had made offered me work. I ended up staying a whole year, working for a travel agency doing their social media, blogging, and managing student interns. After working here for a little while, I started up The Boho Traveller. This was at the tail end of 2016, mostly for fun and to share with friends and family what I was doing while living abroad. With a degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Florida, I figured this could be a unique and interesting addition to my portfolio if nothing more.
My goal on The Boho Traveller is to give people down-to-earth travel advice, tips, and tricks. I want to share my own unique story of how I came to be where I am now. I believe everything happens for a reason, and I want to help people find their own way, with the help of my logical travel advice. Finding your own way, and truly being able to enjoy and experience a place without struggling too much and having someone to help guide you, makes travel so rewarding, and I want to be the guide for people from any walk of life. I currently take at least one trip a month, and my most current travels can be found on my Instagram. Travels of recent past include a sailing trip in the Gulf of Mexico, NYC, NY, Peru, Colorado, Alaska & Canada, Cancun, Mexico and will soon include Las Vegas, Chicago, Bali, and hopefully more of South America. I spend my free time plotting when my next flight will be. I love all new experiences, whether it be camping in the lonely countryside, or trying a trendy new bar in a big city. As long as I can soak in a new culture, or walk in a new way of life for a few days, I’m happy. My advice to all travelers and those who want to take on the world; You can’t plan out your whole life, float to where the wind takes you.
